Resumen de Estigma público hacia las mujeres víctimas y supervivientes de violencia de género en el ámbito de la pareja por parte de los/as profesionales que las asisten. Factores involucrados y sugerencias de lucha contra el estigma

Lara Murvartian Carrascal

  • Professional helpers play a key role in the process of recovery and liberation from intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). International literature has shown that professionals also exert public stigma towards women who are victims and survivors of this violence. Currently, there are no studies on the public stigmatization of women experiencing IPVAW in Spain. However, some national studies have found the existence of negative attitudes of professionals towards these women. The first objective of this dissertation was to analyze the state of the art on public stigmatization towards women victims and survivors of IPVAW. The second and main objective was to analyze public stigma towards women victims and survivors of IPVAW from professional helpers in Spain. Specifically, to identify the components that help to understand the functioning of this stigma and the relationships between them. Finally, the third objective was to elaborate a set of recommendations to combat public stigma among professionals. The first objective was addressed by two systematic reviews of the literature on public stigma in high-income countries (publication 1) and low- and middle-income countries (publication 2). Second, stigma among those working in the justice and law enforcement systems (n = 11) (publication 3) and in health and psychosocial intervention services (n = 18) (publication 4) was analyzed based on the testimonies of 29 professionals. From the analysis of the professionals' testimonies, answers were given to objectives 2 and 3. Objective 3 is the only one that was not addressed in the publications, but in the text of this dissertation. Qualitative methods were always used, and thus related categories were found that provided answers to the objectives. Finally, the results of this dissertation were discussed, as well as their implications for research, resulting in new lines of work, some of which are already underway. With regard to the practical implications of the findings, the identified recommendations to combat stigma were discussed, reflecting on what it would mean to implement them at the structural, societal and professional levels.?
