Francisco Manuel Carmona Carmona

With this investigation we have tried to confirm the hypothesis of the relevance of the artistic patrimony of the Cordovan convents of Dominican Sisters for the History of Art as well as for Spanish female conventualism. Based on these assumptions, we have developed a discursive structure that serves the purpose of demonstrating its validity.

Having verified that the historiographical attention to the art of the Cordovan convents of Dominican Sisters has been insufficient and that the studies to determine the origin, the evolution and the mechanisms of preservation of the artistic patrimony of these cloisters are still unpublished, we believe that it is essential to provide an artistic historical background to provide an answer to the main hypothesis underlying this study.

We have previously gathered some evidence in the form of articles that have been published in several journals of Social Science, which, due to space requirements, have not allowed us to publish them at greater length. Therefore we believe that we have largely contributed to establish the importance of the historical and artistic heritage of these communities of Dominican contemplative nuns.

This study analyses the historical and social contextualization of the actors involved in the conventual phenomenon developed in the province and bishopric of Cordoba by the Second Order of Saint Dominic. It reveals the interests behind the decisions taken by the Order of Preachers and the different types of founders, which led the ten religious foundations that originated between the last quarter of the 15th century and the beginning of the 17th century to be established. In the same way, we investigate its relevance for the upcoming patronage policy. With the help of unpublished documentation contrasted against specialized bibliography on the subject, we have managed to outline the most outstanding aspects of the Dominican conventual history in Cordoba, therefore promoting the understanding of the origin and development of the artistic patrimony of these communities.

We have extensively dealt with the artistic heritage generated and treasured by these religious communities through the independent development of significant aspects for the History of Art. Most remarkably the origin, formation and conservation of the different structures and artistic pieces of movable nature.

As regards conventual architecture, we have outlined a list of facilities which have survived and those others that have been studied with more attention according to the evidence found in bibliography. On the other hand, we have analyzed movable goods by establishing its origins. The documentation we have had access to has proved to be particularly fertile in exposing certain aspects of the female conventual history unknown until recent times.

We also offer a systematic overview of the different artistic typologies revealed by the documentation, the scientific bibliography and the pieces that are still preserved in the two convents which are still open in the province of Cordoba. In particular, we have traced unpublished sculptural, pictorial and silverware pieces, establishing their authorship with the use of the historical-artistic method.

The vicissitudes experienced by the Dominican communities from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day have been reported and how they resulted in either the articulation of conservation mechanisms or in the loss and dispersion of the conventual artistic patrimony.

One of the objectives of this study is heritage safeguard in spite of the scarce echo it has in the field of artistic criticism.

With respect to conventual architecture we have described the channels through which both churches and cloister structures have been created and developed. We have identified the participation of outstanding architects such as Hernán Ruiz II and Juan de Ochoa or stonemasons such as Luis González Bailen. His name has been extracted from anonymity. As for the movable goods, we have revealed the dynamics of their hoarding and permanence in the convent.

Among all the artistic heritage that the Dominican nuns of Cordoba guard, we have carefully studied certain pieces unravelled from the convent walls, making them known by this and previously published articles. Carvings from the workshops of Pedro Roldán and his daughter, la Roldana, alternate with pieces of Italian origin, some of them attributed here to the Roman sculptor Francesco Terilli. Among the pictorial works found in the convents, names such as Cornelis I Schut, Jan I Brueghel, Paul Bril, the Bassano workshop, Domenico Fiasella il Sarzana or Scipione Pulzone il Gaetano appear among the painters of Italian and Flemish origin; while Pedro Romana, Alejo Fernández, Juan de Jáuregui, Juan Luis Zambrano, Sebastián Martínez Domedel or an anonymous Francisca de Atienza de Zúñiga, are among the national artists. We also unveil various silver pieces that have remained locked within the walls of the convent. They are as outstanding as the Cordovan workshops of Rodrigo de León, Damián de Castro, Antonio de Santa Cruz Zaldúa, Manuel de Aguilar y Guerrero and José Espejo y Delgado among others. We have also enlarged the creative catalog of artists from Extremadura, such as the Barroque silversmith Diego Ximénez, from Llerena (Badajoz) or the more modern Leopoldo Sáenz, born in the city of Zafra.

Therefore, we consider that we have been able to find evidence of the artistic patrimony of the convents of the Dominican Sisters in Córdoba. According to historical, social, economic and religious It has been proved a turning point for the History of Art and the Spanish feminine conventualism.
