ABSTRACT: The present PhD thesis has as purpose the knowledge of the structure of the western Cantabri, namely, the Orgenomesci and Vadinienses, during the Roman Empire, and a comparison with the Cantabri from the southern borderline and the bordering neighbours, the Astures, with the final purpose of determine the sociocultural characteristics of the populations, to know its general structure and evolution in time, to find out the way the roman presence proceeded on the territory and its people, as well as to check if there were or not differences within the western cantabri and its neighbours through the study of the information obtained from the epigraphic documentation. Through the study of the classic sources and the epigraphic monuments we could set the geographical limits of the orgenomesci and uadinienses and we also made a formal analysis of the inscriptions, attending to its typology, material, stereometry and ornamentation and a study of the internal characters: on the one hand, the structure, formulas, epigraphic and paleographic purposes, and on the other, the in depth study of the inscriptions, in a philological sense, focusing on the linguistic composition (onomastics and etymology) and the analysis of the legal-social structure, demography, population movements and cultural enviroment, that allows to know the structure, composition and evolution of this society, and their speech and writing in Latin. This PhD thesis has a Catalogue that facilitates the detection of the data and material, the classification by unit, the definitive reading of the inscriptions and the systematization of all of the data to ease this analysis. This thesis also brings a whole and total vision of the western cantabri and its nearby neighbours, who lived a complex situation: at the end of the IV-V centuries AD the attachment to some traditions that has not lost social meaning, brought the coexistence and syncretism of the indigenous and roman realities, which is manifested by the supports, onomastics and socials purposes. The new system would give the natives a roman facies and substancial changes in customs, mores and manners: Rome contributed new structures without altering the basis, exploited to ensure its economic and social authority.
