  • What are shadows other than divine rays sparkling in human imagination, which the hand of the artist fixes in the matter for the sake of comforting the soul in the torment of life?" Benedetto Croce What should a museum represent? In my modest opinion, only a source of divine rays which light the project protecting the artist's works with a view to comparing and animating future generations. The light-space ratio is difficult to define, though both elements are concrete and well defined. Space in its physical reality is an environment which, as Plato observes, is calculable and perceivable, as it is based on the relation of distances between the objects which occupy it "Light exists for us only by virtue of our visual organ receiving images, giving elements their luminosity, colour and saturation".

    By applying this relation between space and light to the architectonic world, we transform it into a relation between space used and lighting. The problem of light in architecture does not only concern the functional aspect of vision, but also the cognitive and symbolic aspect. Lights make architecture dynamic and transforms vision in time. These days the relation with natural lighting is searched especially within the ecological sensitivity stream aiming at energy savings and which promotes the design of buildings that maximise their use of daylight. Concerning the control of natural light in the museum world, some considerations must be made on existing regulations in order to highlight how compliance with them prevents undesired effects on the work on show and for the viewers. Despite the excitement around the subject of museographics developed in recent years, information on natural light in museums is very poor. Documentation is limited and is not accompanied by a sufficient level of research and analysis.This gave rise to this paper, which deals on the subject: "Natural light in art museums in the northern Mediterranean".
