ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to discover the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic (achievement) and social (school) adjustment in students of secondary education. To analyze the contribution of EI in this area, two studies were carried out considering three variables: academic achievement, general adjustment to school and adjustment to peers, in both incorporating key predictors according to previous existing literature (self-efficacy, general intelligence and family climate). In addition, in study 1, as a predictor, perceived EI was added and personality (traits) was controlled; in study 2, two predictors were introduced: performed EI and academic motivation. The results show that performed EI (perception, facilitation, understanding and emotional management) is positively related to academic achievement. Likewise, EI, both perceived and performed, has a positive relationship with school adaptation. Therefore, in view of the integral development of students, this research highlights the determining role of EI for academic and social adjustment, something that should be taken into account in secondary education.
