Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecologic cancer death and it is the fifth most common malignancy in women in Spain1. It is the most aggressive gynecological cancer. The initial symptoms are nonspecific, that is the reason why the majority of women have been diagnosed in advanced-stage of disease. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common type of malignances arising from the ovaries. Angiogenesis plays a fundamental role in the development of solid tumors, invasion and metastasis3. It is a process that involves angiogenic factors like Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and anti angiogenic factors like Pigment Epithelium-derived Factor (PEDF). The disruption of the delicate balance of pro- and anti- angiogenic factors, results in the creation and maintenance of a growing vascular network; with special interest in metastasis and possible therapeutic strategies targeting these signal transduction pathways. Objectives. This study analyzed the relation of five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) -2578 C/A, -1154 G/A, -460 C/T, +405 C/G and +936 C/T in the VEGF gene in patients with EOC, compared to patients carrying benign tumors or healthy ovaries. Serum VEGF levels were studied and also PEDF gene, and their relation with the main clinicopathological variables and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with cancer...
