    The Revolt of the Lash broke out in Rio de Janeiro in 1910 in the ranks of the Brazilian navy. Its goals included the end of corporal punishment inflicted on sailors and better pay. This remarkable episode of the First Republic became, in many ways, a stage where several memories are in dispute, if not entirely conflicting. This article seeks to build a bridge between the Revolt of the Lash and its echoes through the cultural area. Choosing among different possible options, we first approach its sounds in popular music. Then we reframe this topic from the angle of the relationship between the leader of the sailors, João Cândido, and statuary. Finally, the issue is reconsidered in the framework of plots for recreating a novel.

    A revolta da chibata eclodiu no rio de Janeiro, em 1910, nas fileiras da Marinha brasileira. Entre seus alvos figuravam o fim dos castigos corporais infligidos aos marujos e a obtenção de melhores soldos. Esse episódio marcante da Primeira república se converteu, sob vários aspectos, num palco de disputas de memórias di-versas, quando não inteiramente conflitantes. Neste artigo se procura lançar uma ponte entre ela e seus ecos na área cultural. Dentre outras opções possíveis, privilegiam-se, aqui, num primeiro momento, os sons da revolta na música popular. Na sequência, o tema é recolocado ao se enveredar pela relação estabelecida entre o líder dos marinheiros, João cândido e a estatuária. Por último, a questão é repensada nas tramas da recriação de um romance.
