    Resumen: Al igual que las novelas latinoamericanas en su conjunto, las novelas mexicanas se comenzaron a traducir a finales de los años veinte del siglo pasado. No obstante la relevancia que revisten las traducciones para conocer los inicios de la difusión de la literatura mexicana en ámbitos lingüísticos distintos al del español, su historia aún no se ha escrito. Este artículo ofrece un panorama de cómo se desarrolló el proceso. Da cuenta de que las primeras traducciones no fueron promovidas por los autores o editores originales, sino por terceros; se hicieron con base en contratos que suscribieron los editores con los autores, ya fuera de manera directa o a través de intermediarios; en general, no generaron beneficios económicos y, en contraste con lo que se ha sostenido, sólo en algunos casos las traducciones al francés estuvieron en el origen de las traducciones a otras lenguas europeas.

    Abstract: Just as with Latin American novels as a whole, the translation of Mexican novels began in the late 1920s. In spite of the importance of the translations in order to get to know the beginnings of the diffusion of Mexican literature in linguistic domains other than Spanish, their history has not been written so far. This article offers an overview of the development of the process. It points out that the first translations were not promoted by the authors or original editors, but by third parties; were undertaken on the basis of contracts signed by the editors and authors, be it directly or through intermediaries; generally did not generate economic benefits; and, in contrast to what has been argued, the translations into French were only in some cases the source of the translations into other European languages.
