    Se presenta la forma en que el temazcal o baño de vapor mesoamericano, fue reducido y simplificado por sus estudiosos a un elemento con características medicinales y terapéuticas. Esta visión se construyó en la época colonial y fue reforzada por el positivismo, quien negó otras funciones que lo caracterizaban. Es a partir de la visión del neoevolucionismo que se revalora su participación en lo sexual, social, económico y cultural, quedando al descubierto su valor polifacético.

    This paper examines the way in which the concept of the “temazcal” or Mesoamerican steam bath, was reduced and simplified to having only medicinal and therapeutic characteristics. This exclusively curative vision, constructed from the time of the colonial period, was reinforced by positivism which denied and attacked other functions that previously characterized the “temazcal”. Neoevolutionary visions allow for the reevaluation of “temazcal’s” sexual, social, economic and cultural aspects, and the discovery of its multifaceted values.
