This article analyzes the current political crisis in Honduras from a social standpoint. The social exclusion approach is preferred to the poverty approach in analyzing the social roots of the crisis. This attempt is based on a study of several boroughs in the department of Intibucá that are a perfect example of the so-called “deep Honduras”. Most of the households suffer from extreme exclusion and, among possible settings to overcome this situation, only out migration seems feasible. However this is an opportunity to the few having resources to migrate. Therefore the social roots of the crisis are not only deep, given the generalized incidence of extreme exclusion, but are also persistent due to the absence of alternatives.
