The preliminary results of a research project under way are presented, dealing with the study of the pathways by which the Neolithic traveled along the Ebro Valley, mainly through the data recovered in the excavation of three different sits (Artusia, Trocs and Valmayor XI). The analysis of the archaeological record of these sites and others yet published in the Ebro Valley and the interior of Iberia, permits to try a very tentative and preliminary approach to the archaeological indicators of those pathways.

During the last decades we have gained a considerable amount of data about the Mesolithic lithic toolkit in the Western Mediterranean. A large set of instruments probably existed for a variety of purposes: foraging practices (both hunting and fishing), food processing, crafting activities, etc. Disposable tools, scarcely elaborated, coexisted with formal and more complex instruments, often composed of multiple parts and realized on a variety of raw-materials (e.g. stone, shell or bone inserts; bone or wood hafts, etc.). In this paper we will consider one particular type of tool that appears in the Western Mediterranean starting from the Seventh-Sixth millennia BC: the notched and denticulated blades. We will consider and interpret from a functional viewpoint materials from five different Late Mesolithic contexts: the Cocina Cave and Vallmayor IX in the NE of the Peninsula, Artusia rock-shelters in Navarre and Atxoste and Mendandia rock-shelters in the Basque country.

By comparison with other areas that were traditionally richer in archaeological evidences of the first Neolithic, such as those of the Iberian periphery, and especially the Levant, the interior of the Iberian Peninsula was pushed into the background of the debate on the origins of neolithisation, during a considerable period of time. At first, in the 70’s, the researchers thought that the initial colonisation of the interior of Iberia was related with the arrival of megalithism. In the 80’s it was successful the idea of a delayed and dependent “Inner Neolithic”, but in the 90’s a major change in the interpretation of the Neolithic in this area occurs. To the polemic radiocarbon dates of the Verdelpino rock shelter (Cuenca) fresh evidences had been added, and new and important excavations have been developed in sites with ample stratigraphies (such as La Vaquera Cave in Segovia) or with sets of structures, materials and 14C dates (the Ambrona Valley sites in Soria), which have forced...

The Ambrona Valley (Soria, Spain): a chronological reference for the first Neolithic occupation of Inner Iberia. The ample set of absolute dates, both on charcoal and short life samples (fauna, cereals), obtained in two open air settlements (La Lámpara and La Revilla) suggest a review of the chronological framework attributed to the first Neolithic colonization of Iberia. They also ask us to deeply reflect on the functioning of these habitats from the first communities with productive economies in the interior of Iberia, and on the limits and problems of the 14C method application. Chronologies have been traditionally built on the basis of a single date or a reduced set of dates on each site, when the availability of ample sets of dates from the same structure (number 4 of La Revilla and 9 of La Lámpara, for instance) occasionally offers surprisingly big temporal spans, and shows that the matter is much more complex than what was thought until the present day.

In this paper we would first present just a brief summary of the Bell Beaker settlement evidence in the interior highlands of Iberia, but we would also like to stress some particular points regarding the role of Beakers in the domestic contexts and also related with a false dichotomy usually presented between the domestic sphere by contrast or even opposition with the ritual one, almost exclusively related with the burial contexts.

Paleoenvironment and cultural changes in the early Holocene: the rock shelter of Artusia (Unzué, Navarra) This paper presents the results of the 2009 and 2010 excavation campaigns of the Artusia rock shelter (Unzué, Navarre, Spain). Five different Mesolithic occupation phases (Artusia I-V) have been identified, specifically in the Mesolithic of Notches and Denticulates (Artusia I and II) and the Geometric Mesolithic (Artusia III, IV and V). In addition, the sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental record allowed to clearly define several climatic events which developed around 6550 cal BC 8500 cal BP and 6250 cal BC 8200 cal BP. Here we present a description of these events and their (pre)historical interpretation with the aim of recognizing how they influenced the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer groups living in the Ebro Basin of the Iberian Peninsula.

Agriculture first reached the Iberian Peninsula around 5700 BCE. However, little is known about the genetic structure and changes of prehistoric populations in different geographic areas of Iberia. In our study, we focused on the maternal genetic makeup of the Neolithic (~ 5500-3000 BCE), Chalcolithic (~ 3000-2200 BCE) and Early Bronze Age (~ 2200-1500 BCE). We report ancient mitochondrial DNA results of 213 individuals (151 HVS-I sequences) from the northeast, central, southeast and southwest regions and thus on the largest archaeogenetic dataset from the Peninsula to date. Similar to other parts of Europe, we observe a discontinuity between hunter-gatherers and the first farmers of the Neolithic. During the subsequent periods, we detect regional continuity of Early Neolithic lineages across Iberia, however the genetic contribution of hunter-gatherers is generally higher than in other parts of Europe and varies regionally. In contrast to ancient DNA findings from Central Europe, we...

Sheep remains constitute the main archaeozoological evidence for the presence of Early Neolithic human groups in the highlands of the Southern Pyrenees but understanding the role of herding activities in the Neolithisation process of this mountain ecosystem calls for the analysis of large and well-dated faunal assemblages. Cova de Els Trocs (Bisaurri, Huesca, Spain), a cave located at 1564 m a.s.l on the southern slopes of the Central Pyrenees, is an excellent case study since it was seasonally occupied throughout the Neolithic (ca. 5312–2913 cal. BC) and more than 4000 caprine remains were recovered inside. The multi-proxy analytical approach here presented has allowed us to offer new data elaborating on vertical mobility practices and herd management dynamics as has not been attempted up until now within Neolithic high-mountain sites in the Iberian Peninsula. For the first time, δ18O and δ13C stable isotope analyses offer direct evidence on both the regular practice of altitudinal...
