The article deals with the drama Inferno (1964) by the German writer Peter Weiss (1916-1982), a contemporizing rewrite of the first cantica of the Divine Comedy which is part of the first phase of the DC-Projekt, the unfinished dramatic project to which he obsessively dedicated himself between 1964 and 1969. The article analyzes from a comparative perspective the trans-contextualising mechanisms to which the contents and characters of Dante’s hypotext are subjected, and examines the complex creative and epistemological path through which the writer succeeds in contemporizing the allegoric polysemy of the Comedy in the rewrite. By studying the meaning of the work at the literal level, it is shown that in this process of contemporization the classical allegory acquires typically modern characteristics, by which Peter Weiss may be said to have recovered the most remote and outdated element of the sacred poem to adapt it to a horizon of meaning without a trace of religious transcendence.
