- Igor Pérez Tostado obtained his PhD on History and Civilization in the European University Institute in 2004. He held... moreIgor Pérez Tostado obtained his PhD on History and Civilization in the European University Institute in 2004. He held a Post-Doctoral position at the Moore Institute (NUI Galway) and since 2005 teaches and researches at the Early Modern History unit at the Pablo de Olavide University. In 2020 he became associate professor in Early Modern History.
He specialises in the history of migration, exile, violence and early modern genocide. He is the author of Anglo-Spanish Relations During the English Civil Wars: Assassination, War and Diplomacy in Early Modern Europe (forthcoming) and Irish Influence at the Court of Spain in the Seventeenth Century (2008). He has co-edited two books on Ireland and the Iberian Atlantic (2010 and 2020), a volume on early modern exile (Los exiliados del rey de España, 2015) and is the editor of A cultural history of genocide in the early modern world (forthcoming).
He is at present working on a History of the Irish in the Spanish Caribbean and the relations between the Spanish Monarchy and the British Islands through the Early Modern Period, which special interest in the use of violence and stereotypes in creating those links.edit

Présentation : L'histoire religieuse a longtemps constitué un chapitre à part dans l'historiographie des sociétés modernes et contemporaines, souvent réservé aux spécialistes du fait religieux, des croyances ou des pratiques, et des institutions. La question des appartenances religieuses demeure pourtant un élément déterminant en histoire sociale et politique, qu'il convient de reconsidérer à la lumière des déplacements historiographiques les plus récents. Il s'agit de réfléchir à la façon dont les sciences sociales permettent de penser les appartenances religieuses, de la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, en comparant des espaces géographiques parfois très éloignés. La larga tradición luso-española de estudios sobre la Persia Safávida prolonga el interés mutuo que sintieron ambos espacios en la época moderna. El establecimiento del portugués Estado da Índia, con centro en Goa y su control de la entrada al golfo Pérsico a través de la isla de Ormuz, pusieron la base para el establecimiento de las relaciones perso-ibéricas. A partir de ese arranque, la rivalidad con el imperio otomano, los intereses mercantiles de ambas partes y las aspiraciones de los religiosos, permitieron tejer lazos entre las monarquías ibéricas y el imperio persa durante más de dos siglos. Portugal, y después la Monarquía Hispánica, constituían un rival a las aspiraciones navales y comerciales del naciente imperio safávida, pero también un potencial aliado militar. He is working on a book analysing the Irish history in the Spanish Caribbean from the early Seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. He also deals with the history of religious and political violence, diplomacy and foreign relations. This article deals with the most active research trends and richest archives available in Spain which deal with the history of Irish migration in Latin America. Their greatest strength lies in the Early Modern Period, where all Latin speaking territories of America were politically linked to the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish archives are rich in administrative material (appointments, trials, contracts, last wills, etc.), well preserved and many of them now available on-line. However, they are weak in private documentation (memoirs, personal letters, etc.). Having lost all monasteries and a good deal of its medieval Christian movable assets, England became one of the greatest producers of new Catholic relics during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This article aims to look, from a material point of view, at the circulation and consumption of English relics on the Catholic continent. In this case, these products were created because of violence and circulated as an answer to it. Gifts and the exchange of relics served to obtain support for the exiled Catholics and for the institutions providing for their education created in the continent, and allowed them to participate in the necropolitics of the Spanish Monarchy. Relics, artifacts and printed and manuscript narratives brought back from all over the world helped construct a selfimage of an English Catholic as a necrocommunity imbued by a sense of historical continuity and connected to a global imagined community.

PROYECTO DE INVESTIGACIÓN MINISTERIO DE CIENCIA E INNOVACIÓN HAR2014- 52414-C2-2-P
El proyecto coordinado "En los límites de la violencia: masacre y proyección de la Monarquías Ibéricas en los siglos modernos” , es la continuación de “Afinidad, violencia y representación: el impacto exterior de la Monarquía Hispánica”
El primer proyecto estudió la dimensión global de la Monarquía Hispánica a través de los lazos que construyó con personas, grupos e instituciones que, si bien fuera de su jurisdicción en sentido estricto, desarrollaron un estrecho vínculo con la misma y ayudaron a definir su liderazgo durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Así, la proyección exterior, elemento fundamental para entender en su justa medida el papel de las Coronas Ibéricas en el mundo moderno, se desarrolló a través de afinidades basadas en el nexo religioso, cimentado a través de una experiencia compartida de sufrimiento colectivo, y la creación de espacios de representación de la misma dentro y fuera de las fronteras de las mismas. Hasta ahora esta dimensión del estudio de las relaciones exteriores modernas había sido limitada debido a la falta de una aproximación global al fenómeno, limitada por historiografías nacionalistas (interesadas en una porción geográfica del conjunto como justificación de una genealogía nacional) o religiosas (centradas en el desarrollo de movimientos religiosos individuales). El proyecto que ahora termina ha estudiado el desarrollo de alianzas tanto tácticas como estratégicas que obligaron a la propia Monarquía, a través de la toma de posiciones respecto a sus aliados y en diálogo con los mismos, a definir su propia naturaleza como potencia hegemónica. Los resultados principales se han centrado en la dimensiones diplomática (Bravo Lozano, Pérez Tostado), educativa (Braun), intelectual (Hazard), material (Yun Casalilla), religiosa (Bravo Lozano, Hazard, Pérez Tostado) y, finalmente, de la violencia en sus distintas dimensiones (todos).
Las conclusiones del trabajo demuestran que la violencia, tanto por su importancia y naturaleza polifacética, como por las posibilidades que aporta como objeto de estudio, sirven de manera excepcionalmente útil para construir una visión conectada como comparada de la proyección exterior de las monarquías ibéricas. De todas las dimensiones exploradas, estudio comparado de la violencia colectiva extrema en las fronteras de los imperios ibéricos y británico ha demostrado ser la más prometedora.
Al contrario que la violencia religiosa estudiada en el primer proyecto, que se ejerce en un marco normativizado y normalizado, las explosiones de violencia colectiva ofrecen otra serie de características que las hacen especialmente relevantes para comprender procesos en marcha más profundos a no sólo agracias del registro de los “discursos ocultos” de los grupos dominados (J. C. Scott, Weapons of the weak: everyday forms of peasant resistance, New Haven, Yale University Press, 1985; Idem, Domination and the arts of resistance hidden transcripts, New Haven, 1990), sino también, lo que nunca ha sido estudiado: las “pesadillas hegemónicas”, los miedos ocultos de los grupos dominantes que, al igual que los discursos ocultos, no quedan registrados salvo en momentos de extremo peligro y desestabilización. La 7ª edición del Seminario Internacional sobre Violencia Colectiva y Genocidio tendrá lugar los días 25 y 26 de abril de 2024 en la Sede Olavide de Carmona. El encuentro centrará su atención en Asia durante la Edad Moderna temprana, examinando en particular su relación con los imperios ibéricos. Este seminario pretende ahondar no sólo en los casos de violencia extrema, sino también explorar la violencia sostenida, aunque de menor intensidad, a menudo denominada "violencia lenta". Este tipo de violencia ha tenido consecuencias de gran alcance que se extienden hasta la era moderna, ya sea por sus efectos perdurables o por el resurgimiento de la violencia derivada de conflictos no resueltos. Esta actividad se desarrolla en el marco del proyecto de generación de conocimiento «En los límites de la violencia (III): la violencia lenta de los imperios modernos» (PID2021-122319NB-C22) financiado por MCIN/ AEI /10.13039/501100011033/ y por FEDER Una manera de hacer Europa.

The 7th edition of the International Seminar on Collective Violence and Genocide will take place on April 25 and 26, 2024 at Sede Olavide in Carmona. The event will center its attention on Asia during the Early Modern Era, particularly examining its relationship with the Iberian empires. This seminar aims to delve not only into the instances of extreme violence but also to explore the sustained, albeit lower intensity, violence, often referred to as "slow violence." Such violence has had far-reaching consequences that extend into the modern era, whether through its enduring impacts or the resurgence of violence stemming from unresolved conflicts. This activity is developed in the framework of the knowledge generation project «En los límites de la violencia (III): la violencia lenta de los imperios modernos» (PID2021-122319NB-C22) funded by MCIN/ AEI /10.13039/501100011033/ and by FEDER A way of doing Europe.

The Permanent Seminar Iberian Worlds and Early Globalization will have a new session next Friday 28 May 2021 at 6pm (CEST). On this day, the professors Federica Morelli (Department of Cultures, Politics and Society, University of Turin) and Alexander M. Semyonov (Department of History, HSE University in St. Petersburg) will discuss the end of the Spanish and Russian empires through a conversation entitled « Crises, transformations and dissolution in the Spanish and Russian empires: Comparative views».
The speakers meet in order to compare the way in which the empires were dissoluted, the reactions towards crises, the images shaped around the empires as well as the empires’ legacy. After the dialogue, the assistants will have the opportunity to debate.

The workshop "Jurisdiction(s): legal and historical perspectives" will discuss how the idea of jurisdiction has affected and continues to affect the construction and exercise of political, social and economic power through law and the institutions of justice. The main premise is that the concept of jurisdiction is crucial to understanding how different forms of power are articulated in present and past societies. Participants in this event will discuss how authority and sovereignty are constructed, debated and confronted in historical and present plurijurisdictional scenarios.

Se abre el plazo para la presentación de propuestas de comunicaciones relacionadas con cualquier aspecto de la experiencia irlandesa en el Atlántico Ibérico en los siglos modernos.
El congreso internacional Irlanda y el Atlántico Ibérico II: circulación, ejército y cultura material que se celebra en Sevilla los días 27 y 28 de octubre de 2016 es la segunda edición del congreso del mismo nombre celebrado en 2008 y aspira a consolidarse como un lugar de encuentro y reflexión de las líneas de investigación histórica desarrolladas en conexión entre Irlanda y el Atlántico Ibero-Americano en la época moderna.
En este ocasión, el congreso coincide con dos efemérides, el nacimiento de María Tudor (1516) y el fallecimiento de conde Hugo O´Neill (1616), que tan relacionadas están con las relaciones entre la Monarquía Hispánica e Irlanda.
El congreso está abierto a la presentación de todo tipo de resultados de investigación. Para esta edición se valorarán especialmente las propuestas de comunicaciones relacionadas con:
• El servicio de irlandeses en los ejércitos de la Monarquía Hispánica en los siglos modernos
• Hugo O´Neill y su relación con la Monarquía Hispánica
• Las redes transnacionales de exiliados, mercaderes y emigrados que conectaron Irlanda con los distintos territorios atlánticos de la Monarquía Hispánica
• El aporte irlandés a la cultura militar (organización, tecnología, cartografía, etc.)
• Las transferencias de conocimiento e ideas en el espacio atlántico mediante agente irlandeses

• Las propuestas deberán constar de un breve resumen (máximo 200 palabras) y un breve CV (máximo una página) que deberán ser enviados a la dirección ipertos@upo.es con fecha límite el 30 de junio de 2016.
• La aceptación de comunicaciones se notificarán el 15 de julio de 2016.

The II International Congress Ireland and the Iberian Atlantic: Mobility, Military Organisation and Material Culture is going to be held on 27-28 October 2016 in Seville. L’histoire religieuse a longtemps constitué un chapitre à part dans l’historiographie des sociétés modernes et contemporaines, souvent réservé aux spécialistes du fait religieux, des croyances ou des pratiques, et des institutions. La question des appartenances religieuses demeure pourtant un élément déterminant en histoire sociale et politique, qu’il convient de reconsidérer à la lumière des déplacements historiographiques les plus récents. Il s’agit de réfléchir à la façon dont les sciences sociales permettent de penser les appartenances religieuses, de la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, en comparant des espaces géographiques parfois très éloignés.
Il convient pour cela d’interroger l’association trop souvent immédiate entre religion et identité qui fait du lien confessionnel le ferment du lien social. Ainsi, les identités religieuses sont souvent analysées comme l’expression de liens primordiaux, constitutifs des collectifs parce que profondément ancrés dans la culture, les mentalités et les croyances. Elles auraient été particulièrement prégnantes dans les sociétés traditionnelles et dans les sociétés anciennes marquées par le localisme, la ruralité et les structures patriarcales. Les sociétés occidentales et modernes, en revanche, se seraient caractérisées par la compétition entre les États royaux et le pouvoir pontifical sur le contrôle et l’encadrement de la pratique religieuse. En distinguant le spirituel du temporel, en forgeant l’unité politique par l’uniformisation religieuse, les pouvoirs monarchiques auraient jeté les bases d’un long processus de sécularisation qui aurait permis à l’Europe de « sortir » du religieux alors que d’autres régions du monde y seraient restées enfermées.
Cette École thématique entend interroger ce récit de la modernité occidentale qui a participé de la réification du fait religieux comme une dimension spécifique du monde social. En privilégiant des approches localisées et des contextualisations denses, il s’agit au contraire de réinscrire les activités religieuses au sein des configurations sociales et économiques dans lesquels elles trouvent leur origine. Ainsi il convient d’interroger des notions aussi centrales que le rituel ou le sacré dans le rapport aux collectifs, non pas comme des moyens de perpétuation d’une identité immuable, mais comme des manières d’actualiser constamment les frontières fragiles des groupes sociaux. Cela invite dès lors à revisiter les situations de contacts ou de circulations interreligieux, non pas comme des moments exceptionnels de passage, d’affrontement ou de médiation entre des entités culturelles monolithiques, mais comme des modalités ordinaires de cohabitation ou bien de réaffiliation des acteurs sociaux dans des configurations sociales localisées.
En somme, en choisissant d’adopter une approche pragmatique du fait religieux, cette École thématique invite à s’interroger sur ce que les acteurs font quand ils parlent de leur appartenance religieuse, et en quoi ces actions façonnent les appartenances sociales. Tels sont les enjeux d’une histoire sociale qui se saisit des appartenances religieuses, en les ancrant dans les pratiques situées des acteurs sociaux, et en tenant à distance critique le double prisme des sources étatiques et ecclésiastiques.

L’École thématique réunira des spécialistes du monde méditerranéen, américain et asiatique, et mettra en perspective les défis méthodologiques de sciences sociales écrites à l’échelle du monde. Privilégiant une réflexion méthodologique et épistémologique, il s’adresse à un public de doctorants et post-doctorants dont les travaux portent sur les enjeux de l’appartenance sociale et/ou religieuse.
L’objectif est de faire travailler des doctorants et des chercheurs de disciplines différentes qui partagent une perspective historique et une démarche empirique. Pour les étudiants issus des sciences sociales, il s’agira d’enrichir leur questionnaire en leur permettant d’historiciser leurs problèmes, tandis que pour les étudiants en histoire, l’enjeu consistera à acquérir de nouvelles méthodes et de nouveaux concepts pour densifier leur analyse des sources historiques. C’est de la diversité des terrains empiriques que naîtra le dialogue entre des disciplines, des périodes et des objets différents. Il s’agira précisément de tisser les fils et de trouver les correspondances entre la manière dont l’histoire aborde ces questions et la façon dont le font les autres sciences sociales.
L’objectif est également de dresser un état des lieux critique des propositions les plus récentes sur la manière de penser l’appartenance. Nous offrirons ainsi aux participants des repères historiographiques et méthodologiques, tout en leur permettant de présenter leurs propres terrains d’enquête, leurs sources, et leur démarche. Les séances s’organiseront autour de conférences, de séminaires de travail et de séances de présentation des travaux des étudiants. Il s’agira de faire dialoguer des historiographies parfois éloignées afin de faire émerger une réflexion commune sur les enjeux de l’appartenance religieuse dans une perspective globale.

The International Seminar "Collective Violence and Genocide V: Connections and Comparisons" will begin on September 30. This fifth edition, which will have two sessions, the first on September 30 and the second on October 1, will focus on the comparative and connected history of collective violence and genocide in all parts of the world, both in Early Modern and Contemporary periods.
The goal of studying the connections and comparisons among several cases of destruction of groups aims not at finding a common unifying source, but at expanding the understanding of each of the cases under study, grasping of the elements that make it unique and the commonalities that link, implicit or explicitly, different cases together. To achieve that, participants in the seminar will focus on the deep study of specific dimensions within the collective violence or genocidal process that can be then compared to other cases, the connection and disconnections among contemporary cases and the methodological framework needed to study so.
Sessions will be held online through through the Zoom platform without prior registration.

Aude LORIAUD, « La conversion des jeunes filles protestantes ou juives : un risque de rupture familiale et sociale ? (France, 1685-1787). Une approche sociale de la conversion. »
Cette étude historique des conversions religieuses consiste, d'une part, en une analyse des conséquences des conversions (contraintes ou choisies) sur l'intégration sociale des nouvelles converties en France à l'époque moderne, et propose d'autre part une réflexion sur les causes et les motivations des conversions volontaires en s'appuyant sur des concepts issus de la sociologie et de la psychologie sociale.

Esta sesión es posible gracias a la colaboración del grupo PAI HUM 1000 y el proyecto de investigación PID2019-107430GB-100, titulado «El sudeste asiático bajo la influencia ibérica en el mundo».
El evento constará de una sesión doble en la que se abordarán los temas del comercio a larga distancia y el reformismo en el Sudeste Asiático durante la época moderna. Los ponentes serán José Antonio Martínez Torres (UNED) con su propuesta titulada «Memoria y remedios para Filipinas y Molucas: Hernando de los Ríos Coronel», y Amelia Almorza Hidalgo (UPO) con su presentación «La navegación en el Mar del Sur y su impacto en los circuitos comerciales de la globalización temprana». El profesor Carlos Martínez Shaw (UNED) dirigirá la sesión y fomentará el debate.

This session is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the PAI HUM 1000 group and the research project PID2019-107430GB-100, entitled "Southeast Asia under Iberian influence in the world".
The event will consist of a double session addressing the topics of long-distance trade and reformism in Southeast Asia during the modern era. The speakers will be José Antonio Martínez Torres (UNED) with his proposal entitled "Memory and remedies for the Philippines and Moluccas: Hernando de los Ríos Coronel", and Amelia Almorza Hidalgo (UPO) with her presentation "Navigation in the South Sea and its impact on the commercial circuits of early globalization". Professor Carlos Martínez Shaw (UNED) will lead the session and encourage discussion.

From the GLOBALGUNS project (H2020 MSCA IF 2018 n°845675) funded by the European Union and coordinated by researcher Brice Cossart and the PAI HUM 1000 group, "History of Globalization: violence, negotiation and interculturality" we invite all interested scholars to the international colloquium "State navies, transnational Private Economic Networks and the Circulation of Technology (1500-1800)" which will take place on November 14 and 15, 2022.
This international colloquium proposes to re-evaluate the duality of the relationship between states and military technology in the modern era, inviting participants and attendees to consider the contribution of a third element: the transnational private economic networks that supplied states with technological resources for warfare.

El Seminario permanente «Los mundos ibéricos y la globalización temprana» inicia su actividad de 2022 el próximo viernes 28 de enero a las 18:00 horas (CET). En esta ocasión, la sesión consistirá en una mesa redonda sobre revistas académicas, titulada «Revistas de investigación y estrategias de publicación», en la que se contará con editores que presentarán el pasado reciente de las revistas y su situación actual, política y proceso editorial, así como aspectos formales importantes para la publicación y otras cuestiones relevantes para preparar futuras contribuciones.
La sesión contará con las intervenciones de Consuelo Naranjo-Orovio (IH-CSIC, Madrid), que presentará la revista Culture & History. Digital Journal, Kris Lane (Tulane University, Nueva Orleans) que tratará los aspectos principales de la Colonial Latin American Review y Gagan Sood (LSE, Londres), quien nos dará a conocer el funcionamiento del Journal of Global History.

The Permanent Seminar "Iberian Worlds and Early Globalization" begins its 2022 activity next Friday, January 28 at 6:00 pm (CET). On this occasion, the session will consist of a round table on academic journals, entitled "Research Journals and Publication Strategies", in which editors will present the recent past of journals and their current situation, policy and editorial process, as well as important formal aspects for publication and other relevant issues to prepare future contributions.
The session will feature presentations by Consuelo Naranjo-Orovio (IH-CSIC, Madrid), who will present Culture & History. The sixth edition of the International Seminar Collective Violence and Genocide will take place on November 18 in the afternoon (16:00 hours CET) and on Friday, November 19 in the morning (10:00 hours CET).
The main objective of this sixth seminar is to reflect on the impact, consequences and legacy of the extreme violence of the Modern Age in contemporary times. Thus, historians and jurists will be present to analyse case studies such as Ireland, the Balkans or Ukraine where the understanding of contemporary collective violence involves studying the long shadow of the past.

The next edition of the Permanent Seminar "Iberian Worlds and Early Globalization" of the PAI HUM 1000 group History of Globalization: negotiation violence and interculturality, will take place next Friday, June 18, 2021 at 18:00 hours (CEST) through the Zoom platform. The title of this meeting will be "Empire and intimacy". This session will delve into the multi-cultural intimate relationships that developed in the Yucatan Peninsula and the Isthmus of Panama during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with special attention to the contrast in the impact of the encomienda and the slave trade of different origins. We will seek to connect micro analysis with macro perspectives to invite the analysis of global intertwinings, as well as to make comparisons with other regions where cultural exchange impacted families, households and institutions, thus modulating early globalization processes.
The session will be moderated by João Vicente Melo, member of the PAI-HUM 1000 group, and will feature the following presentations:
