Background: Literature collects that people with Autism Spectrum Disorder without Intellectual Disability (ASD-noID) frequently suffer co-occurring clinical problems that predict poorer adult outcome and reduce quality of life (QoL). Previous studies pose doubts about their capacity to recognize and communicate these problems, but that is an issue that, although relevant, has not yet been systematically revised. Method: A meta-analysis on 32 studies (1422 pairs of participants) was carried out to assess to what extent self-reports provided by people with ASD-noID match those provided by their parents. The articles were categorized according to the domains assessed and method. Results: Significant differences between self- and hetero-reports were found in the domains of Depression, QoL and Social skills (d= 0.406; -0.399 and -0.683, respectively), but not in Anxiety and Social anxiety. The average degree of agreement between both groups of reports was r = .40. Conclusions: Self- and ...

The aim of this study was to examine longitudinally gestural and vocal coordination in multimodal communicative patterns during the period of transition to first words, and its role in early lexical development. Eleven monolingual Spanish children were observed from 9 to 12 and 15 months of age in a semi-structured play situation. We obtained three main findings: (1) the use of multimodal patterns of communication increases significantly with age during the period studied; (2) the rate of use of those multimodal patterns at 12 months predicts lexical development at 15 months; and (3) the use of the pointing gesture at 12 months, especially when it is accompanied with vocalization and social use of gaze, is the best predictor of lexical outcome at 15 months. Our findings support the idea that gestures, gazes and vocalizations are part of an integrated and developing system that children use flexibly to communicate from early on. The coordinationof these three types of elements, espec...

This manuscript shortly introduces a methodological proposal regarding how human beings process multimodal information at early ages in life. It specifically examines to what extent different developmental scenarios may lead to different trajectories of this capacity. Infants at genetic risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (sibs-ASD, from now on) are at higher risk than the general population for either presenting ASD or showing subclinical traits. Due, firstly, to the genetic liability of the disorder and, secondly, to available evidence showing multimodal processing impairments in diagnosed individuals at several ages, sibs-ASD seem to represent an atypical situation of development particularly interesting to track the course of the ability. Although there is a lack of evidence explicitly exploring it in that sample as well as in ASD on the whole, many recently published works use multimodal stimuli to test how sibs-ASD process social information. Here we propose a meta-analysis that...

summary APUNTATE program aims to provide support to people suffering from Autistic Spectrum Disorders and their families. The university volunteer program is designed to support them during leisure time and day life activities. This recent experience shows the relevance of the quality in vol unteer work programs both in terms of training of future phycologists as well as in their future career development. The program also reveals the need of developing stable volunteer work, with social awareness, accom panied by good training frameworks.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have shown difficulties to integrate auditory and visual sensory modalities. Here we aim to explore if very young infants at genetic risk of ASD show atypicalities in this ability early in development. We registered visual attention of 4-month-old infants in a task using audiovisual natural stimuli (speaking faces). The complexity of this information and the attentional features of this population, among others, involves a great amount of challenges regarding data quality obtained with an eye-tracker. Here we discuss some of them and draw possible solutions.

Ángel Rivière developed a very personal way of presenting the complex challenges posed by the scientific definition and explanation of autism. His compact narrative, of great pregnancy, reproduced the hegemonic proposals of his time yet also provided original coordinates. Many of those ideas remain valid to date. However, others are challenged from different angles, even questioning whether autism as a construct, as it has been defined since the 1970s, should continue to guide research, treatments and expectations that are transferred to society.

Accumulating evidence suggests that visual object understanding involves a rapid feedforward sweep, after which subsequent recurrent interactions are necessary. The extent to which recurrence plays a critical role in object processing remains to be determined. Recent studies have demonstrated that recurrent processing is modulated by increasing semantic demands. Differentially from previous studies, we used dynamic causal modeling to model neural activity recorded with magnetoencephalography while 14 healthy humans named two sets of visual objects that differed in the degree of semantic accessing demands, operationalized in terms of the values of basic psycholinguistic variables associated with the presented objects (age of acquisition, frequency, and familiarity). This approach allowed us to estimate the directionality of the causal interactions among brain regions and their associated connectivity strengths. Furthermore, to understand the dynamic nature of connectivity (i.e., the ...

Naming is considered a left hemisphere function that operates according to a posterior-anterior specificity gradient, with more fine-grained information processed in most anterior regions of the temporal lobe (ATL), including the temporal pole (TP). Word finding difficulties are typically assessed using visual confrontation naming tasks, and have been associated with selective damage to ATL resulting from different aetiologies. Nonetheless, the role of the ATL and, more specifically, of the TP in the naming network is not completely established. Most of the accumulated evidence is based on studies on patients with extensive lesions, often bilateral. Furthermore, there is a considerable variability in the anatomical definition of ATL. To better understand the specific involvement of the left TP in visual object naming, we assessed a group of patients with an epileptogenic lesion centered at the TP, and compared their performance with that of a strictly matched control group. We also administered a battery of verbal and non-verbal semantic tasks that was used as a semantic memory baseline. Patients showed an impaired naming ability, manifesting in a certain degree of anomia and semantically related naming errors, which was influenced by concept familiarity. This pattern took place in a context of mild semantic dysfunction that was evident in different types and modalities of semantic tasks. Therefore, current findings demonstrate that a restricted lesion to the left TP can cause a significant deficit in object naming. Of importance, the observed semantic impairment was far from the devastating degradation observed in semantic dementia and other bilateral conditions.
