The prisoners of war (POWs) have been one of the underresearched aspects of WW1. Anyway, this was not really the case in Japan, where the Germans and a few Austro-Hungarians taken captive in Chinese Tsingtau (November 1914) left vivid memories of a friendly interaction with the local population surrounding the camps in the Japan archipelago where they spent most of the conflict. This research, which has been conducted in Japan and Germany, tries to shed light on Eastern and Western views in regard to this historical chapter, and also to explain the underlying reasons of the intercultural exchange with a war in the background.
