El presente trabajo consta de dos partes diferenciadas que forman un todo. En la primera se aborda el estudio de la palabra árabe qantara (puente) y se analiza su dudosa etimología. La segunda parte va dedicada al arabismo `alcántara', cuyo germen fue la misma (imitara. Quienes lo trataron consideran que no fue usado como sinónimo de puente o acueducto, salvo como nombre de lugar. A partir del s. XVII experimenta dos repentinas resurrecciones. En el diccionario de la RAE hoy solo aparece con la acepción de cajón de telar.

This work consists of two different parts that form a whole. The first part deals with the study of the Arabic word qan tara (bridge) and analyzes its dubious ety-mology. The second part is dedicated to the Spanish-Arabic loanword `Alcantara', whose germ was the word clan/ara itself. Many authors consider that it was not used as a synonym for bridge or aqueduct, except as a place name. From the seventeenth cen-tury onwards, it undergoes two sudden resurrections. In the dictionary of the RAE it only appears today with the meaning of loom box.
