Resumen de «¿Qué haré en Roma?»: John de Salisbury y la filosofía como viático

Encarnación Ruiz Callejón

  • This paper deals with the analysis of social structure and the concept of knowledge in John of Salisbury. In times of crisis of values, Salisbury calls for more justice, more morality and more philosophy. For him, ethics is not a preparation that culminates in metaphysics. It is not a treatise on virtue to hoard merit for the hereafter. It is an art for living in society and being useful to others. Moderate scepticism is the best guide to orient ourselves in society and in life in general. The following sections analyse: 1) The structure of the body politic in Salisbury and the health and sickness of the body politic. 2) The enlargement of society that Christine de Pizan will demand and her perspective on the common good. 3) Salisbury’s scepticism and why philosophy should offer a specific viaticum to women.
