    Introduction: This study explores the concept of the elixir of life, a mythical potion present in diverse cultures and literatures, through a comparative analysis of two works: 'Dr. Heidegger's Experiment' by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the comedy 'Cuatro corazones con freno y marcha atrás' by Enrique Jardiel Poncela. Methodology: The analysis begins with a historical review of the elixir of life to establish a common context. Both literary works are then analysed, addressing the biographical and literary contexts of Hawthorne and Jardiel Poncela that are relevant to the study. Results: Both authors' perspectives on the elixir of life are examined, noting how each integrates this fantastic element into their narrative. Hawthorne and Jardiel Poncela, coming from different cultural and temporal contexts, offer distinct approaches that reflect their respective societies and times. It highlights how the works differ in their structure, development and the implications of the use of the elixir. Conclusions: The study highlights the richness of interpretations of the myth of the elixir of life in literature, showing that, despite cultural and temporal differences, this mythical theme continues to fascinate and offer new angles of analysis on the human condition and the desire for immortality.

    Introducción: Este estudio explora el concepto del elixir de la vida, una poción mítica presente en diversas culturas y literaturas, mediante un análisis comparativo de dos obras: “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” de Nathaniel Hawthorne y la comedia “Cuatro corazones con freno y marcha atrás” de Enrique Jardiel Poncela. Metodología: El análisis comienza con un repaso histórico del elixir de la vida para establecer un contexto común. Seguidamente, se analizan ambas obras literarias, abordando los contextos biográficos y literarios de Hawthorne y Jardiel Poncela que son pertinentes para el estudio. Resultados: Se examinan las perspectivas de ambos autores sobre el elixir de la vida, notando cómo cada uno integra este elemento fantástico en su narrativa. Hawthorne y Jardiel Poncela, provenientes de diferentes contextos culturales y temporales, ofrecen enfoques distintos que reflejan sus respectivas sociedades y épocas. Se destaca cómo las obras difieren en su estructura, desarrollo y las implicaciones del uso del elixir. Conclusiones: El estudio resalta la riqueza de interpretaciones del mito del elixir de la vida en la literatura, mostrando que, a pesar de las diferencias culturales y temporales, este tema mítico continúa fascinando y ofreciendo nuevos ángulos de análisis sobre la condición humana y el deseo de inmortalidad.
