    Tomando como punto de partida ciertos detalles biográficos del vicecanciller Andrés Roig (1564-1622), algunos inéditos, este artículo reflexiona en torno al modo de vida nobiliario de aquellos protegidos por el duque de Lerma que, como Roig, medraron a la sombra del valido. Un discurso en tres actos (medrar, vivir, morir) en el que se pone en el centro del debate la importancia del objeto artístico para destacar socialmente. En una sociedad en la que la apariencia lo es todo, en vida y en muerte, los cargos y títulos conseguidos requieren de una complementaria «ostentación, fausto y magnificencia», en palabras del mismo Roig. El caso valenciano ofrece ejemplos muy representativos y poco estudiados de la práctica del valimiento, sobre todo por cuanto el duque de Lerma poseía allí todos sus estados patrimoniales no castellanos y notables intereses que trató de consolidar.

    This paper reflects on the noble way of life of those who, protected by the Duke of Lerma, prospered in the shadow of the favourite, as exemplified by the vice-chancellor Andrés Roig (1564-1622), whose biographical details, some of them unpublished, are presented as a starting point for this reflection. The discourse is structured in three acts, each focusing on a specific aspect of social life: to prosper, to live, and to die, focusing on the importance of the artistic object in order to stand out socially. In a society where appearance is everything, whether in life or death, the positions and titles achieved necessitate a complementary «ostentation, pomp and magnificence», in Roig’s own words. The Valencian case offers very representative and little studied examples of the practice of favouritism, particularly given that the Duke of Lerma possessed all his non-Castilian patrimonial estates and notable interests there, which he sought to consolidate.
