La Revolución Industrial, surgida en Europa a finales del XVIII, supuso importantes avances técnicos, económicos y sociales, y por ello debe reconocerse la transcendencia de su estudio, su conservación y su difusión. Para la sociedad europea actual es un reto el poner de relieve las fábricas y máquinas construidas para las actividades industriales, los procesos y herramientas utilizados, así como los entornos y paisajes de los centros industriales y mineros. Además, también son de gran interés las manifestaciones intangibles de la industria, como la música, las canciones o ciertos usos y costumbres. Todo este conjunto de bienes materiales e inmateriales debe ser estudiado, rehabilitado y puesto a disposición del público para que los europeos de hoy puedan conocer y apreciar el significado y el valor de los sitios industriales.
El patrimonio industrial ha adquirido en los últimos años un protagonismo muy destacado en la evolución del concepto de Europa dentro de la idea global de patrimonio cultural en su conjunto y sus vestigios están dispersos por toda la geografía europea.

The Industrial Revolution, which started in Europe at the end of the 18th century, implied important technical, economic and social advances, and therefore the importance of its study, conservation and dissemination must be recognised. It is a challenge for today European society to highlight the factories and machines built for industrial activities, the processes and tools used, as well as the environments and landscapes of the industrial and mining centres. In addition, the intangible manifestations of industry, such as music, songs and certain customs and practices, are also of great value. All these tangible and intangible assets must be studied, restored and made available to the public so that European citizens from today can learn about and appreciate the significance and value of industrial areas.
In recent years, industrial heritage has acquired a very prominent role in the evolution of the concept of Europe within the global idea of cultural heritage as a whole, and its vestiges are scattered throughout Europe.
