Resumen de La redención de los ‘espíritus extraviados’. El Hospital Militar de Carabanchel y la redención de penas por el trabajo

El presente artículo quiere esbozar cómo el régimen franquista empleó a presos como mano de obra asequible en la reconstrucción de Madrid en la inmediata posguerra. La investigación, a la par que traza una panorámica en torno el origen, signif icado y funcionamiento del Patronato de Redención de Penas por el Trabajo, quiere indagar acerca del proceso de metamorfosis del Hospital Militar de Carabanchel. Fundado en 1896 con el cometido de guarecer y atender a enfermos, en la década de 1940 transmutaría en un destacamento penal. Concluida la Guerra de España, el hospital alojaría a presos que, trabajando para el Estado y por cuenta de empresas privadas, efectuarían obras tendientes a la reconstrucción de la capital española. El empleo de memorias y diarios de testimonios de época, junto con el recurso a fuentes archivísticas y bibliográficas, nos permitirá comprender la actividad del hospital y como era el día a día de los presos.

This article outlines how the Franco regime exploited war prisoners as affordable labour in the reconstruction of Madrid in the post-war period. The inspection, while it draws an overview of the origin, meaning and functioning of the ‘Patronage for Redemption of Penalties through Work’, it also inquiries about the process of metamorphosis of the Carabanchel Military Hospital. An established building in 1896 to shelter and care for the sick, it would eventually become a penal detachment in the 1940s. After the War of Spain, the hospital would house prisoners who would carry out works aimed at the reconstruction of the capital of Spain, as they were working for the State and on behalf of private companies. The memoirs and diaries of testimonies of the time will help us understand the activity of the hospital and what the day-to-day life of the prisoners was like.
