Resumen de From the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean: Topics and Topoi in Portuguese Language "Crónica" of Twenty-first Century Africa

This chapter argues that examples of Portuguese literary journalism can be found today in Angola and Mozambique, two of Portugal’s former colonies. In the second decade of this century, Angolan journalist Luísa Rogério and Mozambican author Luís Carlos Patraquim have made ample use of the colonialist language’s legacy and the Iberian/Latin American literary journalistic tradition to produce texts that deconstruct any remnants of a Western-biased engagement with African subject matter, while also contributing to the construction of African-voiced journalism with an agenda all its own. Each author employs a user-adapted language in order to reach polyglot African readers and to target international audiences. The journalistic format they have chosen, the crónica, thematically breaks from dominant, Western-imposed agendas and instead delivers reading material for African audiences that can eventually be appreciated by readers in other countries, while putting African-centered subject matter and journalistic methods to the fore.
