Brasil
Previous studies on war coverage in Brazil have had a bias toward male journalists. Still today, the golden age of Brazilian war reportage is linked to Vietnam and to its prominent war correspondent, José Hamilton Ribeiro, who wrote literary journalistic pieces for the magazine Realidade. Studies on World War II war correspondents, male or otherwise, remain scarce. This chapter examines the reportages written by Sylvia de Arruda Botelho Bittencourt, known as “Majoy,” who was sent by the United Press (UP) to cover the war in Europe. In analyzing Bittencourt’s war coverage, later collected in her book Seguindo a Primavera (Following springtime), this chapter hopes to counter the current chauvinistic trend in Brazilian journalism research by recovering—and celebrating—the forgotten, or neglected, literary journalism of Brazil’s pioneering female literary war journalist.
