Gli Hendecasyllabi di Leonardo Bruni tra imitatio ed aemulatio dello stile catulliano

    Catullus was the Latin poet who aroused the most interest in the humanistic period in the Renaissance, especially for his non-conformism that challenged social and literary conventions. His language, often outrageous on the one hand, and poignant and intimist on the other, fasci-nated generations of Renaissance poets who sought to bring the Latin language back along with their mother tongue in order to respond to the increasingly and overwhelming growth of vernacular literature and create a community of Latin poets capable of communicating with each other across Europe. Leonardo Bruni had the merit of being the first among the humanists to experiment with that obscene lexicon and a style characterised by an exaggeration of phonic and rhetorical effects aimed at emphasising the theme expressed. His poetry is influenced by the Ca-tullan taste for direct attack, the best expression of which is the hendecasyllable itself; iuncturaeand stylistic devices or paraphrases of the same verses taken from poems such as 41, 42 and 29 flow into Bruni’s text. The rendering of repetitions, phonic effects, hyperbolic images and the li-bellous lexicon itself reach emulative levels that go beyond the pure imitatio of Catullus.

    Catullo è stato il poeta latino che ha suscitato maggior interesse nel periodo umanistico so-prattutto per il suo anticonformismo capace di sfidare le convenzioni sociali e letterarie. Quel suo linguaggio spesso scurrile da una parte o struggente e intimistico dall’altra ha affascinato generazioni di poeti rinascimentali che hanno cercato di riportare in auge la lingua latina, al pari della loro lingua madre, così da rispondere alla sempre più travolgente crescita della letteratura verna-colare e creare una comunità di poeti latini capaci di comunicare tra loro in tutta Europa, su-perando i confini nazionali. Leonardo Bruni ha avuto il merito di essere il primo tra gli umanisti a sperimentare quel lessico osceno e quello stile caratterizzato da un’esagerazione di effetti fonici e retorici volti ad enfatizzare il tema espresso: la sua poesia è sedotta dal gusto catulliano dell’at-tacco diretto, di cui migliore espressione è proprio l’endecasillabo; in esso confluiscono iuncturaee stilemi o parafrasi di versi stessi tratti dai carmi quali il 41, il 42 e il 29. La resa delle ripetizioni, degli effetti fonici, delle immagini iperboliche e dello stesso lessico scurrile raggiunge livelli emu-lativi superando la pura imitatio di Catullo.
