Abstract
The aim of this article is to diagnose how the argumentative text sequence is addressed in SFL. Based on the characterization of the linguistic and discursive mechanisms of the argumentative texts made by Cuenca (1995 and 2010), this study analyses their presence and treatment in the Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes (2006), in several preparation materials for the DELE (B2) and SIELE proficiency tests, and in six B2 level handbooks from different Spanish publishers. Our results show the presence, almost exclusively, of textual cohesion elements (connectors and discourse markers) and a persisting absence of other mechanisms that also generate coherence and cohesion. It is the intention of the present article to serve as the basis for a reflection that favours a methodological change in how the argumentative text sequence is treated in SFL classrooms.
