    La guerra de 1898 eliminó de las relaciones hispano-estadounidenses el componente de excepcionalidad que había supuesto la presencia de territorios españoles en el continente americano. Se abrió entonces la posibilidad de inaugurar una nueva era en la dialéctica bilateral, que discurrió en líneas generales por los mismos cauces que los contactos entre Washington y el conjunto de países de Europa Occidental. La variable norteamericana de la política exterior española se europeizó así precisamente en el mismo momento en que arrancó el progresivo ascenso de los Estados Unidos al papel de superpotencia. La verdadera cesura en ese proceso de europeización vino marcada por la Guerra Civil, cuyo resultado las volvió a dotar de unas particularidades que no comenzarían a ser vencidas hasta la década de 1970.

    The war of 1898 put an end to the exceptional nature of Spanish-American relations in the 19th century, marked by the presence of Spanish territories in the Western Hemisphere. The aftermath of the conflict saw the opportunity to inaugurate a new era in which U.S.-Spain dealings followed roughly the same lines that characterized contacts between Washington and the majority of Western European nations. Therefore, the American variable within Spain¶s foreign policy became Europeanized precisely at the same moment the United States opened the path that would lead them to reach a superpower status. In this respect, this Europeanization was suddenly disrupted when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. Its results instilled again into the bilateral relation a certain number of peculiarities that would not begin to disappear until the 1970s.
