  • This chapter discusses the Catholic pilgrimages on Malta in the context of social and sustainable development. After reviewing the history of some of the medieval pilgrimage trails on Malta, attention is then turned to discussing the more modern pilgrimages that take place on the island. Some of the socio-environmental issues that have arisen due to the use of these pilgrimages in tourism promotional literature are discussed.
