Resumen de The Florida experiment: an analysis of on‐the‐scene responses to cameras in the courtroom

Bert Pryor, David U. Strawn, Raymond W. Buchanan, Milan D. Meeske

  • On June 30, 1978, the State of Florida completed a year‐long experiment in which television and still camera coverage of trials was allowed. The State Supreme Court must now decide whether camera coverage should be continued in Florida's courtrooms. The Central issue is whether the presence of cameras interferes in any way with the defendant's right to a fair trial. The data presented here represent the responses of judges, lawyers, jurors, witnesses, and other trial participants to questions concerning the effects of cameras on the trial process. The interviews were conducted at the scene of five trials. Results indicated that while a majority of respondents did not perceive the cameras as harmful, a minority of trial participants were concerned about the effects of cameras on witness testimony, juror and lawyer behavior, defendant rights, and other related issues.
