John Bright's persuasive influence in public and in Parliament was one important reason England did not intervene in the American Civil War or recognize the Confederacy. Brighfs efforts are a good illustration of the effectiveness of choosing correct issues in political debate. This paper focuses on his use of slavery as a dominant and constant emotional issue to maintain negative British attitudes about Confederate recognition.
