  • Resumen
    • Calcareous nannoplankton floras from Pleistocene and Pliocene sediments drilled and cored on the Nicaragua Rise permit subdivision of the section into five biostratigraphic zones. Four of these were described previously, but one, the Sphenolithus abies Zone, is new and replaces the previously proposed Discoaster extensus Zone. The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary is placed at the level of extinction of Discoaster brouweri, and an age of 1.8 million years for this datum is considered likely.

The following new taxa are described: Suborder Syracosphaerineae; Family Calyptrosphaeraceae; Subfamilies Discosphaeroideae and Scyphosphaeroideae; Tribes Gephyrocapseae, Cyclococcolitheae, and Umbilicosphaereae; Genera Crassapontosphaera, Kocyzia, and Ellipsodiscoaster; and the species Crassapontosphaera jonesi, Koczypia lepida, Scyphosphaera coheni, Scyphosphaerac antilleana, and Ellipsodiscoaster lidzi. The Family Cyclococcolithoidae Hay & Mohler is validated, and necessary emendations and new combinations are proposed.
