    Richars Li Biaus es una obra medieval del siglo XIII considerada relevante para el análisis de los primeros referentes de la novela occidental, por el interés que suscita su estructura narratológica, que combina elementos propios del cuento popular y rasgos claramente novelescos. Todo ello lleva a convenir que pudiera tratarse de una forma de protonovela, partiendo de la teoría al respecto establecida por Luís Beltrán de Almería, Gordon Hall Gerould y Vladimir Propp. Así como los motivos del niño abandonado, el encuentro con los padres y el motivo del muerto aparecido son característicos en el cuento folclórico o popular, los elementos maravillosos, las pruebas físicas y morales que debe superar el héroe para poder avanzar en su meta y los elementos propios de un espacio urbano, centrado en la economía y el progreso material, son rasgos propios del género novelesco, que se vislumbra en los albores del siglo XII y XIII. Con el análisis de estos elementos se mostrará la calidad estética y la relevancia de esta obra medieval situada en la frontera de la literatura popular y la génesis de la novela.

    Richars Li Biaus is a medieval work of the 13th century considered relevant for the analysis of the first references of the western novel, due to the interest aroused by its narratological structure, which combines elements typical of the folk tale and clearly novelistic features. All this leads us to agree that it could be a form of protonovel, based on the theory established by Luís Beltrán de Almería, Gordon Hall Gerould and Vladimir Propp. Just as the motifs of the abandoned child, the encounter with the parents and the motif of the dead man appearing are characteristic of the folkloric or popular tale, the marvelous elements, the physical and moral trials that the hero must overcome in order to advance towards his goal and the elements of an urban space, focused on the economy and material progress, are features of the novel genre, which can be glimpsed at the dawn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The analysis of these elements will show the aesthetic quality and relevance of this medieval work located at the frontier of popular literature and the genesis of the novel.
