    En la terminología convencional de las guerras carlistas, por el Norte se entiende el teatro de operaciones que abarca los tres provincias vascas y Navarra. Durante la primera de esas guerras, fue uno de los principales teatros de operaciones, junto con el Centro y Cataluña, pero entre 1833 y la segunda mitad de 1837 fue de mucha mayor importancia, sobre todo por la presencia de Zumalacárregui, durante parte del periodo, y del propio don Carlos. Fue, también, y hasta 1839, el objetivo principal del Ejército cristino. Las hostilidades terminaron con el Convenio de Vergara y el paso de don Carlos a Francia, con las últimas fuerzas leales que le quedaban combatiendo hasta la misma frontera. La guerra duró allí, pues, seis años, con incesantes combates, desde batallas a sitios, y una permanente guerra de guerrillas. Desde luego, un corto artículo como este solo puede pretender despertar interés por una materia fascinante, que anime a lecturas más profundas.

    In Carlist Wars parlance, the «North» was, basically the area defined by the three Basque Provinces, Guipuzcoa, Alava and Biscay, together with Navarre. During the First War, it was one of the main theaters of operation –the «Center» and Catalonia being the others–, but between 1833 and the second half of 1837 it had far more importance than the other two, mainly by the outstanding leadership of Zumalacarregui and the presence in the region of don Carlos himself, and it remained, till 1839, the main objective of the Liberal Army. Hostilities ended through the Bergara Convention, and with don Carlos crossing the border to France, with the few loyal troops marching with him firing their parting shots on the very border. During six years the war had raged, with nearly constant strife, from battles to sieges, and from sieges to incessant guerilla warfare. Obviously, such a short article as this can only hope to be a primer, to encourage further reading on a fascinating subject.
