Analogie et coordination en comme

    When it links two NP subjects, the French word comme may trigger two kinds of agreement: in the case of an elliptic comparative clause, called « comparative of analogy », which is an adjunct to the main clause, the verb agrees with the first subject, and the comme-phrase is prosodically incidental. In the case of an agreement with the whole NP comme NP construction, the comme-phrase is prosodically integrated; we show that it must be analyzed as a coordinate construction, with the adverb comme recategorized as a conjunction. At the semantic level, however, the coordinate construction still displays some comparative features. The difference takes place in pragmatics: the semantic contribution of the comparative of analogy construction is understood as a background comment (i.e., it is a parenthetical phrase), whereas the contribution of the coordination construction belongs to the content of the main assertion. This double behavior does not extend straightforwardly to the other similative forms available in French (ainsi que, de même que).

    Le mot comme peut, lorsqu’il relie deux SN sujets, donner lieu à deux types d’accord : dans le cas d’une comparative elliptique dite « comparative d’analogie » ajout à la phrase, le verbe s’accorde avec le premier sujet réalisé et la séquence introduite par comme est prosodiquement « incidente ». Dans le cas d’un accord avec la construction SN comme SN dans son ensemble, la séquence est au contraire prosodiquement intégrée ; nous montrons qu’il s’agit là d’une structure coordonnée, avec une recatégorisation de l’adverbe comme en conjonction. Sur le plan interprétatif, en revanche, la construction coordonnée conserve certains traits de l’ajout comparatif. La différence se situe au niveau pragmatique : la contribution de la comparative d’analogie relève du commentaire en arrière plan alors que la contribution de la coordination appartient au contenu principal asserté. Ce double fonctionnement ne s’étend pas tel quel aux autres formes similatives du français (ainsi que, de même que).
