    En este artículo se llama la atención sobre la dimensión simbólica de las migraciones; en particular, sobre el "trabajo simbólico" que los distintos actores sociales, con sus prácticas y representaciones, efectúan sobre los actuales fenómenos migratorios, haciendo del inmigrante una figura cada vez más central en el imaginario social. Tratamos, así, de analizar el modo en que pensamos e imaginamos la inmigración (a los migrantes en España). Conscientes de que entre imaginario social y ciencia no se da una total impermeabilidad, sino que entre uno y otra se producen continuos procesos de retroalimentación, apelamos tanto a un constante ejercicio de "vigilancia epistemológica", que tenga en cuenta la socio-génesis, alcance y uso de los términos, conceptos y teorías a los que recurrimos en nuestra tarea investigadora, como a la imaginación sociológica para, propiciar formas alternativas de pensar (y de actuar) en el seno de las heterogéneas y complejas dinámicas socioculturales en las que acaecen las actuales migraciones transnacionales.

    This paper deals with the symbolic dimensión of migrations, in particular with the "symbolic work" that the different social actors perform, with their practices and  representations, upon the current migratory phenomena, making of the immigrant a more and more central character of the social imagining. In this way we intend to examine the way in which we think and imagine the immigration (the immigrants) to Spain. Being aware that there is no complete impermeability between social imagining and science, on the contrary, that there is a continuous feedback between them, we cali, on the one hand, upon a permanent exercise of "epistemological vigilance" in order to have in mind the social génesis, scope and use of terms, concepts and theories we use in our research tasks and, on the other hand, upon the sociological imagination in order to induce alternative forms of thought (and action) within the heterogeneous and complex socio-cultural dynamics of the current transnational migrations.
