    Seguendo l’approccio promosso dalla “flologia materiale”, ilcontributo si concentra su una sezione del prologo della redazione in versidel Sept Sages de Rome in antico francese chiamata K, presente unicamen-te nel manoscritto BnF fr. 1553. Troviamo qui un riferimento alla praticadel battesimo degli infanti che richiede un’urgente rivalutazione. Partendodalle conclusioni già raggiunte (Speer 1986), che lo considerano riferimen-to storico non collegato alla spinosa questione dei movimenti religiosi chepreoccuparono la Chiesa almeno dall’undicesimo secolo in poi, si proponeuna prospettiva di analisi che indaga piuttosto la ragione per cui questi versisi trovano proprio in questo manoscritto copiato a Cambrai intorno al 1285 (Lepage 1975). Vengono quindi proposti spunti e percorsi che puntano acontestualizzare il manoscritto su uno sfondo storico meglio delineato.

    Stemming from the approach known as “material philology”, thispaper focuses on a part of the prologue of K, verse version of the Old FrenchSeven Sages of Rome occurring in ms. BnF fr. 1553. Here a controversialbaptism scene is described that is in need of re-assessment. Although it hasbeen concluded that it only represents a historical account of a practice thatdid not concern the times of the poet (Speer 1986), this paper argues thatother textual elements show the contrary. As the poet is referring to a prac-tice promoted by dissent movements that troubled the Church at least fromthe 11th century, another perspective of inquiry is proposed: how did theseverses +nd their way into a manuscript copied in Cambrai around 1285 (Le-page 1975)? ,e paper suggests possible pathways pointing to a historicalcontextualization of the manuscript
