Resumen de Streghe e infanticide presso il Tribunale dell’Inquisizione di Cuenca (Spagna)

Since the middle of the 16th century, in the triangle between Cuenca, Guadalajara and Alcalá de Henares in Spain, an obsession with witches was unleashed. This psychosis was driven largely by an increase in the number of deaths of babies who appeared suffocated and with bruises in their bodies. Society had to look for a culprit to blame for the pain caused and, who better than a witch to accuse her of infanticide? When ecclesiastical hierarchy itself recognized the existence of witches, there was a panic among the neighbors, giving rise to a high number of complaints about mature women, widows and of single women. Therefore in this article we wish to analyze the marginalization to which the Castilian women are subjected to at the end of the XVI c., when reaching a certain age, the fear that old age causes in society at this time and the mechanisms that it articulates to rid itself of these older people who hinder and disturb it.

Dalla metà del XVI secolo in terra di Spagna, nel triangolo compreso tra Cuenca, Guadalajara e Alcalá de Henares, si scatenò una vera e propria ossessione per le streghe. Questa psicosi si intensificò, in particolare, per l’aumento del numero delle morti di neonati, che venivano ritrovati soffocati e con il corpo ricoperto di ecchimosi. La società del tempo aveva bisogno di trovare un colpevole da accusare per tutto quel dolore, e chi meglio di una strega a cui dare la colpa per gli infanticidi? Quando le stesse gerarchie ecclesiastiche presero a riconoscere l’esistenza delle streghe, il panico si diffuse tra le popolazioni, facendo aumentare significativamente il numero di denunce contro donne mature, vedove e sole. Nel presente articolo vogliamo allora indagare lo stato di emarginazione a cui era sottoposta la donna castigliana alla fine del XVI secolo quando arrivava a una determinata età, le paure che la vecchiaia risvegliava nella società del periodo e i meccanismi che la società stessa metteva in atto per sbarazzarsi di queste persone che arrecavano solo disturbo e fastidio.
