    En este artículo examino los estudios más representativos sobre la función y legitimidad de la estética en la ciencia y analizo sus principales ventajas y debilidades. Las contribuciones en este ámbito son escasas y la mayoría se limitan al contexto de evaluación de teorías. Debido a la evidencia de que la estética desempeña también otras funciones en la ciencia, defiendo la necesidad de ampliar el estudio a todas las etapas del proceso científico. Además, argumento que su legitimidad puede basarse en la noción de “comprensión científica” entendida como “unificación”.

    In this article I examine the most representative studies on the function and legitimacy of aesthetics in science and I analyse their main advantages and weaknesses. Contributions to this field are few and most of them focus on theory evaluation. Due to the existing evidence that in addition to its role in theory choice, aesthetics plays other roles in science, I argue both that the subject matter should be the scientific process as a whole and that the legitimacy of aesthetics should be based on the notion of “scientific understanding”, in the sense of “unification”.
