    Los tiempos de crisis financiera y de recesión económica han supuesto nuevos retos para la investigación y gestión del Patrimonio Arqueológico en todo el mundo. En esta conferencia se examinarán algunas respuestas positivas pero también algunos modos y desarrollos preocupantes que se están llevando a cabo en algunas partes del mundo. En el mundo occidental, se están escrutando las infraestructuras y la legislación, y en países en desarrollo se cuestiona la conveniencia de importar los procedimientos y ética occidentales. La lista de Patrimonio Mundial de UNESCO es sólo la punta del iceberg. Se creó con la intención de preservar y disfrutar los lugares más importantes del Patrimonio Natural y Cultural del planeta, pero también como modelo de gestión del Patrimonio menos importante a nivel nacional. Pero hoy en día está perdiendo toda la credibilidad debido a las maniobras políticas y a la declaración delibrada como Patrimonio Mundial por motivos de prestigio, turísticos o de beneficio económico, por parte del Comité de Patrimonio Mundial a sitios que no cumplen con los requisitos.

    The paper examines some positive but also some quite worrying trends and developments around the globe. At a time of financial crisis and economic recession in many parts of the world, new challenges are posed for research and management of archaeological heritage resources. In western countries existing infrastructure and legislation are under scrutiny, and for developing countries the wisdom of importing western procedures and ethics is rightly being questioned. At the same time, archaeological resources are increasingly being exploited for their economic potential without regard for their sustainable preservation. The World Heritage List of UNESCO was intended to promote the preservation and enjoyment of the most important natural and cultural heritage on the planet. It is now fast losing all credibility because of political manoeuvring and the deliberate inscription by the World Heritage Committee of sites that do not meet the requirements, for reasons of prestige,tourism and economic purposes.
