El imaginario bélico de la Casa de Austria fue fundamentalmente continental y europeo. Frente a otros estados modernos que construyeron el relato visual de sus gestas militares recurriendo a batallas y hazañas marinas -como fue el caso de Inglaterra u Holanda-, la Monarquía Hispánica, aun basando su poder en una talasocracia universal, priorizó en gran medida las batallas libradas en los campos de Europa. No obstante, el mar fue abriéndose paso en la construcción artística del poder hispánico. A las representaciones mediterráneas de las jornadas de Túnez y Lepanto que tuvieron lugar en el siglo XVI les sucedieron en el XVII las recreaciones de diversas victorias alcanzadas en el océano Atlántico coincidiendo con la unión política de España y Portugal. Este nuevo imaginario bélico oceánico contribuyó a integrar el gran mar situado más allá de las columnas de Hércules en el Planeta Habsburgo.

The warlike imaginary of the House of Austria was fundamentally continental and European. Other modern states built the visual narration of their military victories using marine battles and feats -as was the case of England or Holland-, but the Hispanic Monarchy, even basing its power on a universal thalassocracy, prioritized the battles fought in the fields of Europe. However, the sea slowly was making its way into the artistic construction of Hispanic power. The Mediterranean representations of the Tunis and Lepanto campaigns -that took place in the 16th century- were followed in the 17th century by recreations of victories in the Atlantic Ocean, coinciding in time with the political union of Spain and Portugal. This new oceanic warlike imaginary contributed to the integration of the great sea beyond the Pillars of Hercules into the Habsburg Planet.
