  Hernán Cortés was a man of his time. However, after his death, his legacy, as happens with relevant people, has been exposed to the fluctuations of the zeitgeist. That was evident under the Franco regime, which used the Cortés anniversary to reaffirm its ideology and to limit, as much as possible and with the participation of researchers and authorities from several countries, the negative effects of international ostracism in which Spain was immersed
