Desde muy joven tuve grande afición por todo lo relativo a Hernán Cortés, in- cluso desde que muy niño, viviendo en Don Benito, veía el monte de Medellín, con el castillo arriba, que simbolizaba a un personaje extraordinario. Más reciente- mente he vuelto a la figura de Cortés con mi libro “Hernán Cortés, gigante de la his- toria. Para 600 millones de hispanohablantes de ambos hemisferios, 500 años después”. Cortés fue un gran empresario de su propio proyecto, supo apreciar el riesgo y entrar en la gran aventura. También es reconocido hoy como un estratega formidable por la reconquista de Tenochtitlán. Y además de buen soldado luchando al lado de sus hombres, fue un excelente capitán general, al tiempo que apreciaba la valentía de sus adversarios, para finalmente tratarlos como verdaderos partícipes de un proyecto común. Ya conquistado lo principal de la Nueva España, supo convertirse en un gran estadista y colonizador, reconocido por Vasconcelos como “padre de la nacionalidad mexicana” –ver dadero promotor del mestizaje con su hijo Martín, habido con Doña Marina–, y por su gran biógrafo Jaime Miralles, como ver dadero “inventor de México”. En los 500 años transcurridos, la figura de Cortés, desde su primer encuentro con Moctezuma, le ha convertido en un gigante de la historia. Con base en todo lo anterior, el Congreso dedicado a Cortés, entre Medellín y Trujillo, en el comienzo de abril de 2019, es una importante contribución a conmemorar lo que fue la emergencia de la Nueva España, y después de México, hace 500 años

From a young age I had a great fondness for everything related to Hernán Cortés, even since I was a child, living in Don Benito, I saw the mountain of Medellin, with the castle above, which symbolized an extraordinary character. More recently I have returned to the figure of Cortes with my book “Hernán Cortés, giant of history. For 600 million Spanish speakers from both hemispheres, 500 years later”. Cortés was a great entrepreneur of his own project, he knew how to appreciate the risk and enter the great adventure. He is also recognized today as a formidable strategist by the reconquest of Tenochtitlan. And in addition to a good soldier fighting alongside his men, he was an excellent general captain, while appreciating the courage of his adversaries, to finally treat them as true participants in a common project. Already conquered the main thing of New Spain, he knew how to become a great statesman and colonizer, recognized by Vasconcelos as “father of Mexican nationality” –true promoter of miscegenation with his son Martin, with Doña Marina–, and for his great biographer Jaime Miralles, as a true “inventor of Mexico.” In the past 500 years, the figure of Cortes, since his first encounter with Moctezuma, has made him a giant in history. Based on all of the above, the Congress dedicated to Cortés, between Medellín and Trujillo, at the beginning of April 2019, is an important contribution to commemorate what was the emergence of New Spain, and after Mexico, 500 years ago
