La comprensión del pensamiento de los alquimistas tenemos que apartarnos de la química y técnica actuales.Los orígenes de la alquimia son: místico, greco-egipcios babilónico, caldeos, judíos, gnóstico, árabe, medieval cristiano y cortesano. Los alquimistas comparten la filosofía aristotélica de una materia primordial, en cambio continuo con capacidad de generación. Y la filosofía estoica con dos principios en el cosmos: el pasivo, la materia; y el activo, el pneuma, agente responsable del cambio que anima el cosmos y le da vida. El alquimista vitaliza la materia por la destilación, para lo cual idea alambique, kerotakis, matraz, horno, entre otros aparatos. Con ellos nos ha legado el laboratorio con, programas de experimentos. Lo que ha llevado a la alquimia a pretender quiere conocer la Naturaleza. Mientras que la ciencia moderna interroga a la Naturaleza con experimentos y la interpreta con teorías en una dialéctica entre teoría y práctica. La alquimia ha influido en la cultura occidental, en la química y sus técnicas, y por tanto en los procesos desarrollados en Almadén para obtener mercurio (azogue) del cinabrio.

The understanding of the thinking of the alchemists has to move away from current chemistry and technique.
