Este artículo muestra las gestiones, afanes, avatares y circunstancias del viaje a América de un gobernador de Indias del siglo XVI, mediante el caso del gobernador de Florida Gonzalo Méndez de Cancio, desde su nombramiento en España hasta su toma de posesión en San Agustín, catorce meses después. Se pone de manifiesto que el diseño y gestión del viaje correspondía al propio gobernador, con el soporte del Consejo de Indias y de la Casa de Contratación. Se muestra también el perfil personal del viajero: familia, negocios, etc., y se compara su viaje con el de otros gobernadores de Florida.

This paper reflects the diversity of managements, concerns, vicissitudes, and other circumstances of the trip to America of a Governor of Indies on the XVI century, through the case of Governor of Florida Gonzalo Méndez de Cancio, from his appointment in Spain until his taking over of the position in America. It is shown that the planning and management of the trip corresponded to the governor himself, with the support of the Council of the Indies and the Casa de Contratación. The personal profile of the traveller is also described: family, business, etc., and his trip is compared with that of other governors of Florida
