La Convención de los Derechos de los Niños de las Naciones Unidas (1989) se refiere al maltrato infantil como “toda violencia, perjuicio o abuso físico o mental, descuido o trato negligente, malos tratos o explotación, mientras que el niño se encuentre bajo la custodia de sus padres, de un tutor o de cualquiera otra persona que lo tenga a su cargo“ 1.
El maltrato infantil es tan antiguo como lo es la humanidad. Progresivamente, la sociedad ha ido tomando conciencia de este problema y se ha ido dotando de diversos modos de protección hacia el menor 1.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) refers to child maltreatment (Article 19) as any physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, while the child is is in the custody of his parents, a guardian or any other person in charge of him1.
Child abuse is as old as humanity is. Progressively, humanity has been becoming aware of this problem and society has been endowed with various ways of protecting the minor1.
