El Geoturismo en Venezuela se remonta al año 1991, con el nacimiento del Museo Geológico Vial®, inaugurado por la empresa petrolera Corpoven, S.A. (Filial de Petróleos de Venezuela PDVSA), el cual consistía en crear una cultura geológica al alcance de todos los venezolanos para impulsar y preservar los valores del patrimonio geológico. Hoy día, PDVSA, manteniendo la ideología de este proyecto, siempre interesada en los aspectos conservacionistas, y como una contribución más a la divulgación de los valores del país promueve el geoturismo en la cuenca Barinas-Apure hacia el sur occidente del país, mediante la definición de una variedad de Lugares de Interés Geológico (LIG). Entre éstos figuran especialmente el embalse de Tucupido en el estado Portuguesa, por la calidad de las actividades desarrolladas entre las cuales destacan: las geológicas (pudiéndose apreciar y diferenciar las Formaciones Río Yuca, Parángula y Pagüey del Cenozoico) la práctica de excursionismo, observación de aves, rappel y deportes acuáticos.

The Geotourism in Venezuela goes back to 1991,coinciding with the birth of the Road Geologic Museum, inaugurated by the oil company Corpoven, S.A. (Filial of Petroleums of Venezuela PDVSA), which consisted in creating a geologic culture accessible for all the population of Venezuela to impel and to preserve the values of the geologic patrimony. Nowadays, PDVSA, maintaining the ideology of this project, has always been interested in the conservationists aspects, and promotes the geotourism in the Barinas-Apure basin towards the South West of the country as a contribution to spreading the values of the country a variety of places of geologic interest (PGI) have been defined erected, one of the most prominent being the dam of Tucupido in the Portuguesa state. Among the main touristic activities to develop those ones related with geology, such as the landscape and the recognition of geological units like the Rio Yuca Formation, Parángula and Pagüey of Cenozoic era, the practice of hiking, bird watching, rappelling and water sports are to be particularly emphasized.
