La Cofradía de San Miguel de los mareantes de Betanzos, con vida activa desde la baja Edad Media, encarga una imagen devocional para la iglesia de Santa María do Azougue, sede de la cofradía, en el marco cultural barroco. La escena realizada en relieve, en un arco cronológico comprendido entre finales del siglo XVII y primeras décadas del XVIII, muestra al capitán de la milicia celeste venciendo al demonio, ubicado en un espacio aéreo intermedio, ante la mirada atenta y devota de dos almas desnudas que imploran la mediación del santo patrono en el más allá.

The Confraternity of Saint Michael of the sailors of Betanzos, with an active life since the late Middle Ages, commissioned a devotional image for the church of Santa María do Azougue, headquarters of the brotherhood, in the baroque cultural setting. The scene made in relief, in a chronological arc between the end of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th, shows the captain of the celestial militia defeating the devil, located in an intermediate airspace, before the attentive and devout gaze of two naked souls that implore the mediation of the patron saint in the afterlife.
