Abstract

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s El material humano (2009) recounts the challenges faced by the author in his efforts to fictionalize the Guatemala National Police Archives. In this article I read the fiction as a global Latin American novel that reflects on Guatemalan literature and inter-literary relations in the global era. I argue that the autofiction takes the form of the writer’s journal in order to portray the act of creative work. In this way, the novel constructs the image of a cosmopolitan and marginal writer who is able to formulate new aesthetic and political questions about Guatemala due to his outsider perspective.
