The government of Abbot Antón in Sahagún (1398-1417) was marked by a serious conflict against the town council and the king for control of the lordship and jurisdiction over the town. Each side used the instruments of power available to it in their favour. When the king named a corregidor (royal representative for the town), the abbot excommunicated the latter for not respecting the monastery’s rights. When the abbot presented ancient privileges from the monastery’s archives as evidence, the council resorted to recent royal judgments to support their cause. When the council collected taxes to pay for the court case, the abbot excommunicated those tax-payers. The monastery claimed its cause was in God’s service, while the council claimed its cause served both God and king. Those involved threatened the others with fines or prison. They also sought alliances with the powerful, both in the town and the king’s court. In the end, they became embroiled in a conflict of jurisdiction that questions the limits of royal and ecclesiastical power at the highest level.
