Sobreestimación epistemológica de la construcción de nicho

    Cuando se dice que los nichos ecológicos son parcialmente construidos por los organismos que los ocupan, se está aludiendo a la innegable contribución de los propios seres vivos en la determinación y configuración de las variables que definen sus ambientes ecológicos y selectivos. Sin cuestionar la importancia ecológica y evolutiva de esa idea, y aceptando que la misma pone en el centro de nuestra atención cuestiones que quizá no hayan sido debidamente consideradas por ecólogos y biólogos de la evolución, creo que –en contra de lo afirmado por los principales teóricos de esa temática– no es dable sostener que la construcción de nichos constituya un factor evolutivo concomitante con la selección natural: no es dable pensarla como si fuese un agente que actúa “en conjunción” con la selección natural. La construcción de nichos, en todo caso, es un aspecto de la dialéctica entre el viviente y su medio que inevitablemente debe ser considerado en todas las explicaciones por selección natural. El estatuto explicativo de la construcción de nichos sería análogo, en este sentido, al de la lucha por la vida; pero no al de la selección natural.

    Saying that ecological niches are partially built by the organisms that occupy them, means to recognize the undeniable contribution of living beings in determining and setting the variables that define their ecological and selective environments. Without reject the ecological and evolutionary significance of that idea, and accepting that it puts at the center of our attention issues that may not have been properly considered by ecologists and evolutionary biologists, I think–contrary to what is stated by the main theorists of the subject–that is not possible to argue that niche construction constitute an evolutionary factor concomitant with natural selection: it is not possible to think of it as if it were an agent acting ‘in conjunction’ with natural selection. Construction of niches, in any case, is an aspect of the dialectic between the living and their environment that inevitably must be considered in all explanations by natural selection. The explanatory status of niche construction would be similar,in this sense, to the status of struggle for life; but never similar to natural selection status.
