Phraseology research usually stans from the assumption that there is a homogeneous set of idioms of one individual language that are geographically spread across the same area where that language is spoken. This assumption, however, is not correct for ali idioms. Many idioms are known only within a limited arca within one individual language, and various idioms eitist across areas that are much Jarger than any area where one individual language is spoken. The aim of this paper is to point out problems of phraseology research in an areal framework and to discuss two projects on areal phraseology, namely "Survey on the Common Knowledge of Idioms in Colloquial German" and "Widespread ldioms in Europe and Beyond".
